Can COVID-19 be transmitted through my HVAC system?

COVID-19, caused by the virus SARS-CoV-2, is mainly transmitted through droplets. Currently, there is no definitive scientific conclusion about whether these droplets can spread through your air distribution system. While it is theoretically possible for these droplets to stay in the air long enough to enter your HVAC system, some people say the chances of this happening are slim. Nonetheless, it is still advisable to take precautionary measures regarding your HVAC system.

Should I have my HVAC system cleaned?

It is a good idea to have your HVAC system cleaned. Besides helping to eliminate coronavirus particles that may be residing within the system, cleaning parts such as condenser coils and ductwork will keep your air conditioning running smoothly. It is important to note that cleaning your HVAC system would be a one-time sanitization, removing only particles that were already there. To keep your system clean in the future, you will have to repeat the cleaning or take other measures.

Wipe Down Fans and Vents

Dust and debris can build up on exhaust fans and vents throughout your home. When your air conditioning runs or when you use your exhaust fans, this dust and debris can then blow around your home. Wipe down vents in your home, and remove and clean the covers of exhaust fans with soap and water to remove debris and dust.

What other measures can I take to make sure COVID-19 doesn’t spread through my HVAC system?

There are several ways you can reconfigure your HVAC system to limit the spread of COVID-19.
