What To Expect From Your Jacksonville AC Installation

Monday, August 21st, 2023

Whether upgrading your current air conditioning system or installing one for the first time, the installation process can be more complex than you might think. Understanding the stages involved and how you can prepare for a successful installation is essential. AC Designs is here to help you learn every detail of what you can expect from your Jacksonville AC replacement or installation.

What to Expect on Installation Day

If you’re gearing up for an AC installation, there are a few things you should anticipate on the big day. Air conditioning installation isn’t a quick job, and it’s not uncommon for the installation to take an entire day.

This can be surprising for some, but it’s necessary due to the need to remove old equipment and replace it with new components. Upon arrival, the HVAC technicians will review the job details with you, verify the equipment, and prep the job site.

This includes locating the thermostat, breaker panel, equipment room, and outdoor unit. Our techs will also use drop cloths to protect your space. The installation involves work both indoors and outdoors. The technicians will perform various tests, such as checking gas pressure, temperature rise, and proper ventilation.

After the installation, we conduct thorough testing to ensure everything functions optimally. This includes testing gas pressure, temperature adjustments, and ventilation to ensure your new HVAC system operates efficiently.

How Should You Prepare For Your AC Installation?

There are many ways to prepare your home for your new unit. To ensure a seamless air conditioning replacement or installation process, it is important to consider these steps:

Secure Pets

If you have pets, it’s best to secure them in a safe area away from the installation site to prevent accidents or undue stress. Plus, this allows your HVAC technicians to complete their work efficiently and distraction-free.

Protect Valuables

HVAC replacements and installations can get messy. Move valuable items away from the job site to avoid any potential damage during the installation process.

Duct Preparation

Before installing your new air conditioning unit, make sure that your ducts are clean and free of dust and dirt. Dirty ducts can impact the efficiency of your new AC system and result in costly repairs down the road.

Clear the Area

Creating a clutter-free and obstacle-free environment for your HVAC technicians is important. This will help them perform their tasks smoothly. Ensure there is a clear path for them to access various parts of your home where work needs to be done.

Verify Your System

Double-check that the AC system being installed is the correct one you ordered to avoid any potential mix-ups.

How to Increase Your New Unit’s Lifespan

Your AC unit is a valuable investment; extending its lifespan for as long as possible should be your top priority. Regular maintenance and care are some of the best ways to get the most out of your system.

Set up a maintenance plan to ensure regular check-ups and tune-ups. This can significantly extend the life of your AC unit. At AC Designs, our Comfort Zone Maintenance Club offers priority scheduling and replacement, after-hours emergency service, and discounts on repairs and fees.

It’s also essential to keep your unit clean and free from debris. Regular cleaning can prevent clogs and ensure optimal performance. Consider using programmable thermostats to regulate your AC usage, reducing strain on the system.

How Carbon Monoxide Impacts Indoor Air Quality

Friday, April 14th, 2023

Carbon monoxide (CO), a colorless, odorless gas that can be found in many common household appliances, can pose a serious threat to your family’s health if not properly managed. At AC Designs, we’re committed to informing you about the hidden dangers of CO and sharing practical tips to keep your indoor air safe and healthy.

Sources of Carbon Monoxide in the Home

One of the main sources of carbon monoxide in the home is heating systems that have poor ventilation or run inefficiently. If your home’s heating system begins displaying these signs, you may unknowingly introduce carbon monoxide into your home.

Furnaces, boilers, water heaters, and other gas-powered appliances can produce CO if ventilation issues arise. The invisible gas can also come from operating motor vehicles or gas-powered tools in enclosed spaces like garages or basements.

Modern energy-conserving “airtight” houses are at a higher risk of CO poisoning. Their insulation and sealed windows can trap carbon monoxide inside, leading to dangerous home air quality. It is crucial to be aware of these potential sources of CO in your home to protect your indoor air quality and health.

Carbon Monoxide’s Impact

Carbon monoxide is difficult to detect with our senses as it has no smell or color. If introduced into your home, the silent polluter can have a quick impact on your air quality and health. Breathing in CO can lead to symptoms such as headaches, dizziness, nausea, confusion, and even death in severe cases.

Prolonged exposure to carbon monoxide can have serious long-term health effects, including chronic conditions like heart problems and brain damage. It is crucial to be proactive in preventing its presence in your home and checking for it regularly to safeguard your indoor air quality.

Steps to Reduce Carbon Monoxide Levels

Fortunately, there are steps you can take to reduce CO levels in your home and protect your indoor air quality. Here are some essential steps to follow:

Purchase a Carbon Monoxide Detector

Install CO detectors in your home, especially near bedrooms and other sleeping areas. These detectors can give you an early warning if carbon monoxide levels rise, allowing you to take action immediately.

Keep Gas Appliances Maintained

Make sure that all gas appliances in your home, including furnaces, boilers, water heaters, and stoves, are well-maintained by a qualified professional. Regular maintenance and inspections can help identify and fix any issues that may lead to CO emissions.

Open Flues When Using Fireplaces

If you have a wood-burning fireplace, make sure to open the flue properly while it is in use. This will allow for proper ventilation and prevent carbon monoxide buildup inside your home.

Don’t Idle Cars Inside the Garage

Never leave your car running inside an attached garage, even with the garage door open. CO emissions from car exhaust can quickly accumulate in an enclosed space and seep into your home.

Maintain Your Heating System Regularly

Hire a trained professional from AC Designs to inspect, clean, and tune up your central heating system, including furnaces, flues, and chimneys, routinely. Promptly repair any leaks or issues to ensure proper ventilation and prevent CO emissions.

Air Quality Service in Jacksonville, FL

Carbon monoxide in your home can be dangerous, but following these steps will help you keep the poisonous gas out of your home and keep your home comfortable. Schedule maintenance or an inspection appointment with AC Designs today to receive the air quality service you and your family deserve.

The Benefits of Whole-House Dehumidifiers

Wednesday, April 12th, 2023

Humidity levels can have a serious impact on the comfort of your home, especially during hot and humid Florida seasons. Excess moisture can cause musty odors, mold growth, and even respiratory health issues.

That’s where whole-home dehumidifiers come in – they are designed to help maintain ideal humidity levels throughout your entire home. Luckily, the experts at AC Designs are here to help you make the right decision for your home.

AC Units vs. Dehumidifiers – What’s the Difference?

Dehumidifiers and AC units may operate in similar ways, but they deliver different results. The first step in deciding whether or not you need a dehumidifier in your home is to understand how it works in comparison to an air conditioner.

An air conditioner is designed to cool the air in a room or a building by removing heat and moisture from the air. It uses refrigeration technology to lower the temperature and reduce humidity levels, making the indoor environment more comfortable during hot and humid weather.

Air conditioners are commonly used in regions with high temperatures and high humidity levels. On the other hand, dehumidifiers are specifically designed to reduce the moisture or humidity in the air without necessarily lowering the temperature.

It works by pulling in the air from the room, removing excess moisture, and then circulating dry air back into the room. Dehumidifiers are commonly used in areas with high humidity levels or during rainy or humid seasons. Because they aren’t built to cool indoor temperatures, it is still necessary for most homes to have an AC unit, especially in Florida.

When to Purchase an HVAC Dehumidifier

Purchasing a dehumidifier for your home can benefit your indoor air quality in a number of ways. There are many signs of excess moisture throughout your home to look out for. It may be time to invest if you begin to notice:

  • High humidity, such as condensation on windows or walls
  • Musty odors or mold growth
  • Frequent rainy seasons
  • Respiratory health concerns, including worsened allergies or asthma

By installing a dehumidifier, you’ll be able to improve your indoor air quality by reducing excess moisture and lowering humidity levels in your home. This can make the rooms in your house feel cooler without actually adjusting the temperature, saving you money and energy each month.

Investing in a dehumidifier can also reduce musty odors and aid in dust, mildew, and mold prevention to eliminate allergens that may put your family’s health at risk. Support your system by ventilating your home with exhaust fans during rainy seasons or after steamy activities like cooking or showering.

Consider opening windows and doors to circulate the air within your home and place less strain on your dehumidifier. Consult the professionals at AC Designs to determine the best system for your home’s specific needs.

Should You Have the Air Ducts in Your Home Cleaned?

Friday, March 10th, 2023

Air ducts are essential in keeping your home healthy and comfortable. However, as they become clogged with dust and other debris over time, they can negatively impact the quality of the air you breathe. That’s why it is important to schedule regular air duct service and cleaning to maintain your home’s indoor air quality.

What Are Air Ducts?

Indoor air ducts are the conduits that transport air from your heating and cooling system to various rooms in your home. These ducts are typically made from metal or fiberglass and are designed to be as airtight as possible to prevent leaks and maintain proper airflow.

Most air ducts are located out of sight in your home’s walls, floors, or ceilings. As time passes, your ducts may become clogged with dust particles, dirt, pollen, or even mold spores if moisture is present. This can pollute your home’s indoor air and cause serious health risks for you and your family.

Air duct inefficiency can be directly caused by a lack of maintenance and proper cleaning. That’s why it is essential to clean all components of your heating and cooling system regularly to avoid poor filtration and dangerous airborne contaminants.

How Often Should Air Ducts be Cleaned?

Maintain healthy indoor air quality in your home by staying on top of your unit’s duct maintenance. At AC Designs, we recommend scheduling air duct cleaning at least once every two to three years. However, some homes should have their ducts cleaned more frequently.

If you have pets in your home, schedule more frequent duct cleanings to prevent dander from clogging your heating and cooling system. Indoor smoking can also lead to a buildup of smoke residue in your conduits, resulting in odors and even health hazards for non-smokers in your home.

You should also have your ducts professionally cleaned after construction work takes place in your home due to excessive dust and debris build-up. If your overall home air quality begins to decline, don’t hesitate to schedule a professional cleaning with AC Designs.

Issues Caused By Dirty Air Ducts

A lack of indoor air duct maintenance can result in numerous consequences around the house, from respiratory issues to financial burdens.

Allergies and Respiratory Issues

When your air ducts are clogged with dust and debris, the air circulating through your home carries these particles. This can irritate your respiratory system and exacerbate allergies and asthma symptoms.

Reduced Airflow

Dirty air ducts can restrict the airflow in your heating and cooling system, causing your HVAC system to work harder than it needs to. This results in higher energy bills and can reduce the lifespan of your unit. This can also place added strain on your system, resulting in the need for expensive future repairs.

Unpleasant Odors

Improperly maintained air ducts can also cause unpleasant odors to circulate throughout your home, especially if you have pets or if someone in your home smokes.

Mold Growth

When there is moisture in your air ducts, it can lead to mold growth. This can be a serious health hazard, as mold can cause respiratory issues, headaches, and other health problems.

Protect Your Indoor Air Quality

In between professional air duct cleanings, there are many preventative measures you can take to minimize dust build-up. Install high-efficiency air filters in your home to assist your unit in filtering particles like dust and pollen from your indoor air.

Dust and vacuum around your home often to prevent new contaminants from circulating. Be sure to change your air filters regularly to keep your system running efficiently and avoid blockages. You should also ensure that your ducts are properly sealed to prevent moisture and mold contamination.

The Benefits of Using UV Germicidal Lights

Thursday, March 9th, 2023

Poor indoor air quality can exacerbate allergies, worsen asthma, and make your family sick. Investing in UV germicidal lights is a great way to improve your air quality and keep your family safe and healthy. Here’s all you need to know about how these lights work and the benefits they’ll have on your indoor air quality.

What are UV Germicidal Lights?

UV germicidal lights are designed to use small, safe amounts of UV radiation to destroy viruses, mold, and allergens that may compromise your home’s air quality. They work by deactivating the DNA of bacteria that lives inside your home.

By destroying the genetic material of these pollutants, harmful microorganisms are unable to replicate. This is a highly effective way to keep the air you breathe inside your home safe and reduce the spread of illness.

Benefits of UV Germicidal Lights

UV germicidal lights offer many benefits for your home’s air quality. Investing in this technology will curb AC vent mold and bacterial growth, eliminating airborne viruses. This way, your family will experience a reduction in illnesses like the flu and common colds.

Protecting your home with UV lights will also reduce unpleasant odors caused by bacteria and other pollutants. This is especially beneficial in areas with high humidity levels or homes where pets are present.

Germicidal lights will also play a role in removing volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from your indoor air. High levels of exposure may cause serious health issues. These can be found in many of the chemicals we use to maintain and clean our homes.

In addition to the numerous health benefits, these lights can also reduce clogging in your HVAC unit’s condensate drains, allowing it to operate more efficiently. This technology is easy to maintain and typically requires very little maintenance after installation.

Schedule Indoor Air Quality Services

When there is a buildup of particles in your system, it cannot run efficiently. That’s why changing your air filters and using additional treatments like HVAC ultraviolet lights can help improve their efficiency.

When combined with proper routine HVAC maintenance, germicidal lights can help reduce your energy bills and increase your unit efficiency. The expert indoor air quality team at AC Designs is here to help you improve your home’s air quality with UV germicidal lights and other services.

Whole House Air Purifiers – Do You Really Need One?

Thursday, February 9th, 2023

Did you know that indoor air pollutant levels can be two to five times higher than outdoor levels? If your home’s poor indoor air quality is leading to allergic reactions, asthma, or other cold-like symptoms, it may be time to invest in a whole-house air purifier. Here’s what you need to know about air purifiers before buying one.

Why Indoor Air Quality Matters

Prioritizing your health is more than just eating well and exercising often – it’s also important to make sure that you are breathing clean, healthy air. Prolonged exposure to poor air quality can lead to flu-like symptoms, allergic reactions, and even asthma.

Protecting your home’s indoor air quality benefits the overall health of you and your family. Whole-house air purifiers work to remove harmful particles in the air to reduce exposure to mold, dust, or even asbestos in older homes.

The systems can even reduce pesky seasonal allergies and help you get better sleep. Cleaner air in your home results in fewer odors and less time spent dusting and cleaning. It can also extend the life of your HVAC filters and prevent them from being overworked.

How Do Whole-House Air Purifiers Work?

Because we cannot see air quality, it can often be difficult to know how whole-home air purifiers work to filter the air in your home. Here are the most common types and how they successfully remove harmful irritants and keep clean air in circulation.

HEPA Filters

HEPA filter air purifiers are the industry standard for removing airborne particles from your home. These systems are proven to successfully remove 99.97% of irritants like dust, pollen, dander, mold spores, and more from the air you breathe by pulling them through a pleated air filter.

Activated Carbon Filters

Air purifiers with activated carbon filters clean the air through absorption by pulling contaminants onto a surface containing activated carbon. This process in turn releases clean air throughout your home. These systems are best for reducing odors and gases like cigarette smoke that other filters can’t always catch.

Ultraviolet Air Purifiers

Ultraviolet air purifiers contain short-wave UV-C lights that detect and inactivate airborne pathogens before releasing clean air into your home. They are known to effectively reduce bacteria, viruses, and germs to minimize your family’s risk of illness. However, these purifiers require additional surfaces like HEPA filters to successfully remove and trap particles after detection.

How to Use an Air Purifier

You will never be able to eradicate 100% of the dust, mites, and other airborne pathogens from your home and its surfaces. However, an HVAC air purifier can help keep the air that you and your family breathe free of them.

In order to provide your air with the highest level of cleanliness possible, use your purifier the right way and minimize air leaks in your home. This starts with keeping your windows shut while the system is running to prevent extra particles from entering and purified air from escaping.

Consider integrating a smart thermostat with your air purifier to auto-manage room temperature throughout your house. Better control over your home’s ventilation and humidity levels can help keep your purifier functioning efficiently.

Keep in mind that whole-home air purifiers are not to be used in place of regular cleaning methods. Be sure to vacuum your space regularly and dust your home’s surfaces often.

Do Air Purifiers Get Rid of Dust or Dust Mites?

Thursday, February 2nd, 2023

No matter how clean you keep your home, there will always be areas that go untouched, allowing dust, dust mites, germs and other allergens to accumulate. Without an air purification system, your HVAC system may spread harmful particles around your home, causing an increase in allergy symptoms, worsened asthma, and other illnesses. Learn more about the importance of an air purifier in your home here.

Harmful Allergens in Your Home

Particles like dust mites, pollen, mold spores, and pet dander can infiltrate the air within your home very quickly. These irritants often come from pets, damp areas, and even indoor plants. If these allergens are negatively impacting your health, it may be time to consider investing in an air purifier.

Without a way of removing these particles from the air you breathe at home, you may be subject to health concerns from triggered allergies or worsened asthma symptoms. Clean indoor air is highly important in keeping you and your family members safe and comfortable year-round.

Dust Mite Removal & More

By installing an HVAC air purifier, dust and other harmful particles will be trapped before they get the chance to settle in your home. This process will play a significant role in improving the quality of the air you breathe.

Air purifiers have the ability to trap bacteria, viruses, pet dander, and dust mites as well as remove dangerous volatile organic compounds from the air. They can also neutralize smoke from fireplaces and remove unpleasant odors to maintain the highest levels of air quality possible.

Dust mites are weightless, which allows them to circulate in your home’s air for extended periods of time without interruption. Air purifiers pull these particles into their highly-efficient HEPA filters where they are trapped and removed from the air.

Other Ways to Improve Indoor Air Quality

The best way to keep your indoor air clean is by taking any steps you can to support your air purifier. Change your AC filters often to prevent restricted airflow and clogs by debris and dust. Do your best to keep your home’s rugs and carpets clean to minimize the amount of dust accumulating each week.

If you struggle with controlling the humidity in your home, consider purchasing a dehumidifier to remove excess moisture from the air. This will reduce the number of damp areas that emit harmful mold spores into the air you breathe at home.

Overall, keep your space as clean as possible to prevent your air purifier from becoming overworked. It is also important to schedule routine maintenance on your AC unit to ensure that it is functioning efficiently year-round. Well-maintained HVAC systems are essential to dust removal and improving the overall air quality in your home.

Home allergens from dust mites to pet dander are hard to avoid, even with the most high-quality cleaning supplies. Invest in an air purifier today to maintain the high indoor air quality that you and your family deserve year-round. Call AC Designs to learn more about our air purifier installation services today.

How Does an In-Duct Air Purifier Work?

Tuesday, August 9th, 2022

We all want to breathe clean air at home to keep our families comfortable and healthy. An in-duct air purifier can be just the solution you need, but how do you know if it’s right for you?

At AC Designs, we’re committed to helping your family stay comfortable with high quality, cool air. As a top AC company in St. Augustine and Jacksonville, Florida, we install in-duct air purifiers in homes every day. Here are the top tips we give homeowners to help you decide when you might need an air purifier. Ensure your family stays healthy and protect your home from allergens, dust, mold and more.

What Are Air Purifiers?

According to the EPA, without proper precautions and filtration, the air indoors can actually be up to five times more polluted than the air outside. In sealed environments, pollutants can be multiplied due to improper ventilation in contained areas. If you’re concerned about your in-home air quality, installing an air purifier is an easy way to remove airborne pollutants.

Many in-home HVAC units contain paper filters to eliminate things like dust, smoke, and pollen before they begin circulating. However, these filters operate on a basic level and cannot filter smaller particles that may be unsafe to breathe.

Air purifiers can filter smaller particles of mold, bacteria, and viruses. Purifiers with heavy-duty HEPA filters remove 99% of indoor pollutants. At AC Designs, we value the importance of healthy breathing and clean air inside the home, which is why we offer a variety of purifier options

One of our top-of-the-line options is the REME Halo Whole-Home Air Purifier. It ensures that your home circulates clean, allergen-free air by using next-generation indoor air quality technology. Through a dual-ionization process, the purifier releases Hydro-Peroxide plasma that binds to particles in the air, making them large enough to be filtered.

This process allows the purifier to destroy bacteria, mold, viruses and more on the surfaces and in the air of your home. It has been successfully tested on the removal of viruses and bacteria including MRSA, E-coli, and Norovirus.

How Air Purifiers Work

An in-duct air purifier, like the REME Halo Unit, is installed in your unit’s ductwork to remove dust, mold, bacteria, and viruses before they begin circulating throughout your home. Installing an in-duct air purifier is a simple step to restore your home’s air quality and ensure your family stays healthy and safe.

Air purifiers contain fans that suck dirty, contaminated air into the unit. Before the air exits the purifier, it is pushed through filters that are interlaced with fibers. When the air is pushed through these mesh filters, harmful particles like smoke and bacteria are trapped.

Clean air then exits the unit to be circulated throughout your home. This constant filtration process significantly improves your home’s indoor air quality and can help prevent allergies and illness for your family. That’s why it is important to invest in an air purifier proactively.

Signs You May Need An Air Purifier

Dangerous particles aren’t always easy to see, smell, or feel. You may not be aware of the airborne particles in your home until physical symptoms occur. If you begin experiencing these symptoms or notice these signs, it may be time to call AC Designs to install an air purifier.

Dust Mites

If you begin to observe a significant amount of dust mites throughout your home, especially in hidden places like behind the sofa or under your bed, an air purifier may be your best solution. When the air circulating throughout your home is cleaner, you’ll be able to cut down cleaning time and eliminate dust, which will send those pesky dust mites packing.

Stuffy Air/Bad Odors

If the air inside your home begins to smell stale or feel stuffy, this could be a sign of poor indoor air quality. Installing an air purifier will remove the contaminants within your home and eliminate the stuffiness so that your family can breathe fresh, clean air.

Loud Snoring

When particles like pollen and pet dander are circulating throughout your home’s airflow, your airways will remain congested while you sleep. This leads to an increase in snoring and can cause you to get lower quality sleep each night. Investing in an air purifier can lead to less snoring and more restful, quiet nights in bed.

Allergy Symptoms

If you begin experiencing worsened allergy symptoms, asthma flare-ups, or excessive sneezing, the air inside your home may not be safe. Symptoms like excessive sneezing, runny nose, or itchy, red eyes can all be caused by high amounts of dust, pollen, and other particles in the air.

Individuals with asthma are also at higher risk of worsened symptoms without proper filtration of mold and bacteria. An air purifier can eliminate these allergens and prevent unnecessary health risks caused by polluted indoor air.

Schedule an Appointment With AC Designs

Investing in an air purifier is a great way to ensure that the air inside your home is safe and clean to breathe.
