What To Expect From Your Jacksonville AC Installation

Monday, August 21st, 2023

Whether upgrading your current air conditioning system or installing one for the first time, the installation process can be more complex than you might think. Understanding the stages involved and how you can prepare for a successful installation is essential. AC Designs is here to help you learn every detail of what you can expect from your Jacksonville AC replacement or installation.

What to Expect on Installation Day

If you’re gearing up for an AC installation, there are a few things you should anticipate on the big day. Air conditioning installation isn’t a quick job, and it’s not uncommon for the installation to take an entire day.

This can be surprising for some, but it’s necessary due to the need to remove old equipment and replace it with new components. Upon arrival, the HVAC technicians will review the job details with you, verify the equipment, and prep the job site.

This includes locating the thermostat, breaker panel, equipment room, and outdoor unit. Our techs will also use drop cloths to protect your space. The installation involves work both indoors and outdoors. The technicians will perform various tests, such as checking gas pressure, temperature rise, and proper ventilation.

After the installation, we conduct thorough testing to ensure everything functions optimally. This includes testing gas pressure, temperature adjustments, and ventilation to ensure your new HVAC system operates efficiently.

How Should You Prepare For Your AC Installation?

There are many ways to prepare your home for your new unit. To ensure a seamless air conditioning replacement or installation process, it is important to consider these steps:

Secure Pets

If you have pets, it’s best to secure them in a safe area away from the installation site to prevent accidents or undue stress. Plus, this allows your HVAC technicians to complete their work efficiently and distraction-free.

Protect Valuables

HVAC replacements and installations can get messy. Move valuable items away from the job site to avoid any potential damage during the installation process.

Duct Preparation

Before installing your new air conditioning unit, make sure that your ducts are clean and free of dust and dirt. Dirty ducts can impact the efficiency of your new AC system and result in costly repairs down the road.

Clear the Area

Creating a clutter-free and obstacle-free environment for your HVAC technicians is important. This will help them perform their tasks smoothly. Ensure there is a clear path for them to access various parts of your home where work needs to be done.

Verify Your System

Double-check that the AC system being installed is the correct one you ordered to avoid any potential mix-ups.

How to Increase Your New Unit’s Lifespan

Your AC unit is a valuable investment; extending its lifespan for as long as possible should be your top priority. Regular maintenance and care are some of the best ways to get the most out of your system.

Set up a maintenance plan to ensure regular check-ups and tune-ups. This can significantly extend the life of your AC unit. At AC Designs, our Comfort Zone Maintenance Club offers priority scheduling and replacement, after-hours emergency service, and discounts on repairs and fees.

It’s also essential to keep your unit clean and free from debris. Regular cleaning can prevent clogs and ensure optimal performance. Consider using programmable thermostats to regulate your AC usage, reducing strain on the system.

An AC Company Built On Family Values

Our vice president, Corey Tennant, has exemplified our core values from an early age. He got his start at AC designs by helping his father, Ed Tennant (AC Designs president), at just age 13. Since then, he’s worked his way up the ranks, dedicating himself to every aspect of the company from loading trucks to crunching numbers in the office. Ed says that no job is beneath him, and this strong work ethic is the foundation of our team.

Belinda Byers, one of our earliest team members and Maintenance Manager, was drawn to working with us because of our unmistakeable commitment to honesty and customer-focused values. Her decision to leave a large HVAC company was risky, but it was our foundation and core values that made it an easy decision for her.

When asked about joining AC Designs, Belinda said, “back then, most people thought I was going to regret it, but I never have. To this day, we base our decisions on the values Ed set out from the start. It really makes me proud to work here.”

Hear From Our Team at AC Designs

While not everyone on the AC Designs team is a member of the Tennant family, they are still treated as our family. We asked the team various questions about their thoughts on their time with us, and their responses prove our commitment to keeping up with our core values.

The Benefits Of Preventative AC Maintenance

Thursday, June 29th, 2023

In the scorching heat of summer, an AC system that functions properly is a must. However, many homeowners tend to overlook the importance of preventative AC maintenance for their cooling systems. Discover how a little maintenance can go a long way in keeping you cool and comfortable during the hottest months of the year.

What Are the Benefits of Regular HVAC Maintenance?

Maintaining your HVAC system on a regular basis allows you to take proactive steps to extend your unit’s lifespan. Neglecting maintenance can lead to unexpected breakdowns at the worst possible times, leaving your home unprotected from the summer heat. Some top benefits include:

Preventing Malfunctions

Regular maintenance helps identify and address any potential issues before they turn into major problems, keeping your AC running smoothly all year long.

Avoiding Costly Repairs

Catching and fixing small issues during routine maintenance helps prevent them from becoming more damaging and expensive down the line.

Boosting AC Performance

Maintenance tasks like cleaning and lubricating parts enhance the performance of your AC unit, allowing it to cool your space more effectively.

Improving Energy Efficiency

A well-maintained HVAC system operates more efficiently, reducing energy consumption and lowering your monthly utility bills.

Enhancing Indoor Air Quality

Regular filter changes and cleaning can result in cleaner air circulation. This will reduce allergens, dust, and other airborne particles in your home.

AC Maintenance Checklist

When it comes to AC maintenance, it’s important that you cover all the essential tasks to keep your system running smoothly. But how often should you schedule maintenance, and what kind of tasks should be included?

Generally, it is recommended to have your AC unit professionally serviced at least once a year. Ideally, this maintenance should be conducted before the start of the cooling season to address any potential issues and prepare your system for heavy use.

During this service, an HVAC technician will perform a range of tasks, including inspecting and cleaning the air filters, checking and calibrating the thermostat, inspecting and cleaning the coils, lubricating moving parts, checking electrical connections, and evaluating your system’s overall performance.

Investing in preventative maintenance today can save you from costly repairs tomorrow. Failure to schedule these AC services before the summer can result in heavy strain on your unit, eventually leading to a costly breakdown.

Benefits of Central Air Maintenance Plans

Staying on top of AC service can be time-consuming, but with a maintenance plan, you can leave the hassle of scheduling and remembering maintenance tasks to the professionals. Here are some reasons why joining AC Designs’ Comfort Zone Maintenance Club is the best choice for you:

Maximum Return on Investment

Even if only one major problem is prevented over the course of your air conditioner’s life, you’ve likely already exceeded your return on investment. Regularly-scheduled maintenance saves you money in the long run.

Avoidable Repairs

HVAC technicians estimate that around 80% of repairs could have been prevented with regular AC maintenance. By proactively addressing issues, you can avoid costly breakdowns and keep your unit running efficiently.

Priority Scheduling and Service

Joining a maintenance plan ensures you receive priority scheduling and prompt service, especially during peak seasons. At AC Designs, we offer 2 pre-scheduled system checks per year, as well as priority replacement of parts and units and after-hours emergency service.

Signs You Need an AC Replacement

Wednesday, June 28th, 2023

Summer is in full swing in Jacksonville, FL, and the last thing you need is a broken AC unit leaving you stuck in the heat. If your energy bills are rising and your unit is constantly breaking down, your system may need more than just repairs. Learn the warning signs that it’s time for an AC replacement so you can stay comfortable in the summer heat.

When is AC Replacement Necessary?

Understanding your unit’s age, repair history, efficiency rating, and repair cost can help you make an informed decision on whether your unit needs to be repaired or replaced after breaking down. Here are some of the top signs that a replacement is right for you:

Old Unit Age

Most air conditioning systems have an average lifespan of around 10 to 15 years. If your unit is approaching or beyond this range, it’s likely experiencing wear and tear that could lead to frequent breakdowns and inefficiency.

High Repair Costs

If the cost to repair your broken down unit is significant and your system is older, it’s usually more cost-effective to replace it. This way, you can invest in a more reliable unit and avoid costly summer AC maintenance.

Graphic explaining when it's best to repair or replace your HVAC unit

High Breakdown Frequency

It is also important to consider how often your system breaks down. Frequent breakdowns are a clear indicator that your unit is struggling to keep up. If you find yourself constantly repairing your system, it may be a sign that replacement is necessary.

Low Efficiency Rating

With a Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER) rating of 15 or higher, your unit is generally worth repairing. However, if your system has a lower SEER rating, it may be more energy-efficient to replace it with a newer, more efficient model.

Increase in Energy Bills

A sharp increase in energy costs could be a sign of an inefficient HVAC system. Installing a newer model designed to be more energy-efficient can save large amounts of energy each month and lead to lower utility bills.

Benefits of Replacing Your HVAC System

From long-term cost savings to increased comfort in your home, replacing your AC unit comes with many benefits. Older units have to work harder to cool your home, but upgrading to a newer model allows you to take advantage of advanced technology and new energy-saving features and cut down on electricity costs.

Modern AC units come with advanced features like programmable thermostat control and better air filtration, providing your home with enhanced comfort. New units also offer improved reliability and performance that will help you avoid emergency HVAC summer maintenance.

While repairing your old unit might fix the immediate problem, there’s always a risk of further breakdowns due to old age and wear and tear. Consider replacing your unit to enjoy peace of mind knowing that your reliable cooling system will keep your home comfortable for years to come.

How Can I Increase My AC Unit Lifespan?

Whether you have a brand new HVAC system or an older one, it’s important to prioritize regular maintenance to maximize its efficiency. Keep these key maintenance practices in mind year round:

Change Air Filters Regularly

Dirty filters can restrict your unit’s airflow and place strain on your system, leading to lower efficiency. Replace your filters according to manufacturer recommendations to keep your unit running efficiently.

Clear Away Debris

Keep the area around your outdoor unit free from debris such as leaves, branches, and dirt. This allows for proper air circulation and prevents potential damage to your unit.

Use a Programmable Thermostat

Utilizing a programmable thermostat allows you to set temperature schedules based on your schedule. By giving your unit a break while you’re away from home, you can optimize your energy usage and reduce wear and tear on your system.

Join a Maintenance Program

Keeping up with maintenance on your HVAC unit is essential to its longevity and performance. Join AC Designs’ Comfort Zone Maintenance Club to enjoy priority scheduling, priority replacement on parts, services discounts, and more.

Summer Survival Guide for Your HVAC System

Friday, May 19th, 2023

Warm summer months in Florida can wreak havoc on your home’s air conditioning unit, but with the right AC unit maintenance and care, you can keep it running efficiently throughout the season. In this summer survival guide, we’ll provide you with valuable tips and resources to help you maintain your HVAC system and ensure a comfortable and cool home all summer long.

Summer HVAC Maintenance Tips

Being proactive and scheduling HVAC unit maintenance tune-ups is a crucial step in preparing your unit for the summer. At AC Designs, our professional HVAC company can perform a comprehensive inspection and cleaning while checking for any issues to ensure optimal performance.

During your maintenance visit, you can expect services such as checking the refrigerant levels, cleaning or replacing air filters, inspecting electrical connections, and lubricating moving parts. These steps will help your unit operate efficiently, reduce energy consumption, and extend its lifespan.

Remember to change your air filters regularly as old filters can make your unit work harder, reduce airflow, and lead to poor indoor air quality. By keeping your filters clean, you ensure that your system operates smoothly and efficiently without added strain during the summer months.

When you join the AC Designs Comfort Zone Club, you’ll gain exclusive access to our maintenance program that offers benefits like priority service, discounts on repairs, and regular check-ups to keep your HVAC system in top condition.

Running Your AC Unit Efficiently During Summer

Keeping your costs low and your home comfortable depends on the way you run your system during the summer. Make sure to set your thermostat to an appropriate temperature throughout the warm season, aiming for a balance between comfort and energy savings.

Consider investing in a programmable thermostat that allows you to schedule temperature adjustments throughout the day based on your routine. Frequent temperature fluctuations can overwork your unit, so avoid drastic changes and find a comfortable temperature to maintain consistently.

You should also weatherize your doors and windows to reduce unit strain. Seal any gaps or cracks, add weatherstripping, and consider using insulated curtains or blinds. Keeping doors and windows closed while the AC is running prevents cool air from escaping and hot air from entering.

Maintaining a clean home also helps your AC system. Vacuum and dust regularly to reduce the presence of allergens and dust particles in the air. A cleaner home means cleaner air circulating through your HVAC system.

Lastly, be sure to provide shade over your outdoor condenser unit. Direct sunlight can increase the workload on the system, reducing its efficiency. You can create shade by installing an awning, large plants, or other forms of structures.

Consider Upgrading Your AC Unit

Sometimes, the best decision for your summer comfort is to upgrade your AC unit. Here are some signs that indicate it may be time for a home cooling upgrade:

Age

If your unit is over 10 years old, it may be less efficient and more prone to breakdowns. Upgrading to a newer model can provide improved energy efficiency and better cooling performance.

Frequent Repairs

If you find yourself calling for repairs more often than before, it could be a sign that your system is nearing the end of its lifespan. Invest in a new unit to save you from the hassle and expenses of constant repairs.

High Utility Bills

If your energy bills have been abnormally high despite no significant changes in usage, it could be a sign that your AC unit is no longer operating efficiently. Upgrade to a more energy-efficient model to save on your monthly utility costs.

Inadequate Cooling

If your home isn’t reaching the desired temperature or if certain rooms feel consistently warmer than others, your AC unit may be struggling to cool your space effectively. Upgrade to a more powerful and advanced system to ensure consistent and comfortable cooling throughout your home.

Whole House Air Purifiers – Do You Really Need One?

Thursday, February 9th, 2023

Did you know that indoor air pollutant levels can be two to five times higher than outdoor levels? If your home’s poor indoor air quality is leading to allergic reactions, asthma, or other cold-like symptoms, it may be time to invest in a whole-house air purifier. Here’s what you need to know about air purifiers before buying one.

Why Indoor Air Quality Matters

Prioritizing your health is more than just eating well and exercising often – it’s also important to make sure that you are breathing clean, healthy air. Prolonged exposure to poor air quality can lead to flu-like symptoms, allergic reactions, and even asthma.

Protecting your home’s indoor air quality benefits the overall health of you and your family. Whole-house air purifiers work to remove harmful particles in the air to reduce exposure to mold, dust, or even asbestos in older homes.

The systems can even reduce pesky seasonal allergies and help you get better sleep. Cleaner air in your home results in fewer odors and less time spent dusting and cleaning. It can also extend the life of your HVAC filters and prevent them from being overworked.

How Do Whole-House Air Purifiers Work?

Because we cannot see air quality, it can often be difficult to know how whole-home air purifiers work to filter the air in your home. Here are the most common types and how they successfully remove harmful irritants and keep clean air in circulation.

HEPA Filters

HEPA filter air purifiers are the industry standard for removing airborne particles from your home. These systems are proven to successfully remove 99.97% of irritants like dust, pollen, dander, mold spores, and more from the air you breathe by pulling them through a pleated air filter.

Activated Carbon Filters

Air purifiers with activated carbon filters clean the air through absorption by pulling contaminants onto a surface containing activated carbon. This process in turn releases clean air throughout your home. These systems are best for reducing odors and gases like cigarette smoke that other filters can’t always catch.

Ultraviolet Air Purifiers

Ultraviolet air purifiers contain short-wave UV-C lights that detect and inactivate airborne pathogens before releasing clean air into your home. They are known to effectively reduce bacteria, viruses, and germs to minimize your family’s risk of illness. However, these purifiers require additional surfaces like HEPA filters to successfully remove and trap particles after detection.

How to Use an Air Purifier

You will never be able to eradicate 100% of the dust, mites, and other airborne pathogens from your home and its surfaces. However, an HVAC air purifier can help keep the air that you and your family breathe free of them.

In order to provide your air with the highest level of cleanliness possible, use your purifier the right way and minimize air leaks in your home. This starts with keeping your windows shut while the system is running to prevent extra particles from entering and purified air from escaping.

Consider integrating a smart thermostat with your air purifier to auto-manage room temperature throughout your house. Better control over your home’s ventilation and humidity levels can help keep your purifier functioning efficiently.

Keep in mind that whole-home air purifiers are not to be used in place of regular cleaning methods. Be sure to vacuum your space regularly and dust your home’s surfaces often.

At AC Designs, your comfort is our top priority. That’s why we offer air purifier installation services to keep your indoor quality at the level you and your family deserve. Trick or Treat: Should You Repair or Replace Your AC Unit?

Friday, October 7th, 2022

What’s scarier than a broken air conditioning or heating unit? The unexpected bills that come with it! Luckily, there’s nothing to fear with AC Designs on your side. We’ll help you discover whether your unit’s spooky sound or ghastly odor requires repair or replacement.

Common Signs Your AC Needs Repair

Given Florida’s extreme heat during the majority of the year, it is likely that you may encounter the need for AC repair occasionally. There are many common problems that can be solved easily by scheduling a repair service with a trusted HVAC company in Jacksonville, Florida.

Strange noises coming from your AC unit can often be repaired. If you notice a rattling noise coming from your outdoor unit, there is likely a twig or small branch obstructing the fan’s blades. Make sure your unit is turned off, and then try to remove any blockages from your outdoor unit.

A grinding noise is a more serious problem that may be caused by issues with your blower fan belt, motor lubrication, or compressor. We recommend calling a certified HVAC tech to inspect your unit and repair the source of this problem.

If your unit is cycling on and off constantly, it may be low on refrigerant, your thermostat may be malfunctioning, or the coils within your unit may be icy or frozen. A unit that refuses to turn on may be due to electrical problems, an overheated compressor, or a blown breaker. These are repairable problems, but we recommend scheduling regular maintenance to avoid these issues in the future.

The most common repairable AC problems include:

  • Clogged or dirty air filters
  • Poorly-located thermostats
  • Coolant leaks
  • Blown breakers or fuses
  • Clogged drain lines
  • Frozen condenser coils
  • Overheated compressors

Scheduling service with AC Designs can solve all of your AC repair needs. However, the best way to avoid unwarranted repairs is by performing routine HVAC maintenance. A preventative maintenance appointment is a perfect chance for our technicians to locate the source of any issues in their early stages and mitigate them before they turn into a problem later on.

How to Know Your AC Needs to be Replaced

An AC replacement may seem like a trick, but it’s often necessary to avoid further problems and monetary loss. If you have experienced temperature inconsistencies in your home, it’s likely your unit no longer has the power to cool your home efficiently. Minor repairs, like cleaning air filters and replacing thermostats, may temporarily solve this problem. However, as your unit continues to age, it’s a good idea to consider an upgrade.

The most common reason for an AC replacement is old age. Generally speaking, an AC unit approaching the 10-year mark is nearly due for replacement. When deciding between a repair or replacement for larger issues, consider doing a cost analysis. Here’s how:

  1. Take your estimated cost for repair and multiply it by your system’s age.
  2. If this number is greater than $5,000, replacement is usually a better economical choice in the long run.

AC replacements are an expensive investment, but can ultimately save you money down the line. A new unit that is properly maintained will require less frequent repairs and will be more energy efficient. Another advantage of installing a new unit is being able to enjoy improved indoor air quality in your home.

Fire Prevention Month: How to Avoid HVAC Fires

Wednesday, October 5th, 2022

Everyone knows that when your HVAC system malfunctions or needs to be repaired, you’ll likely suffer from a lack of cool air conditioning or comfortable heating, depending on the season. But what many homeowners don’t know is that faulty HVAC systems can create very dangerous problems, including fires.

When homeowners are not aware of these dangers and the signs that point to a fire, they may risk damage to their homes, injury, or worse. Understanding the telltale signs of a malfunctioning AC system can help homeowners and renters realize the importance of regular maintenance to help avoid dangerous HVAC fires.

Causes of HVAC Fires

Understanding the causes of HVAC fires can help homeowners avoid them year-round. Common causes of these incidents include flammable objects, plants, and other clutter being placed too close to your HVAC unit.

Fires can also be caused by faulty wiring within your unit. This often takes place when units are not installed by experienced professionals. HVAC units may also become overheated when they are overworked due to dirty air filters or motor friction, which also puts your unit at risk of catching fire.

Ways to Prevent HVAC Fires

Being proactive about regularly inspecting these areas of your HVAC system is the key to preventing air conditioner fires. Though your AC unit is a well-crafted machine, it’s still subject to the unpredictable nature of the outdoors. That’s why outside of regularly scheduled maintenance by experienced professionals, it’s important to inspect its condition as best you can on your own.

Be sure to check for fuel leaks, keep your unit’s ducts clean, and keep the area around your unit clutter-free. Eliminating all debris and objects from within and around your unit is essential in preventing your unit from malfunctioning or catching on fire.

Prevent HVAC Fires with HVAC Maintenance

A lack of AC maintenance can lead to an HVAC fire due to dirt obstructing airflow, electrical systems that need repair, and more. That’s why it’s crucial to schedule bi-annual AC inspections with a trusted HVAC company.

HVAC technicians will ensure that your unit’s filters and ducts are clean and troubleshoot issues in their earliest stages to extend the life of your unit. When you join AC Design’s preferred maintenance program for a low annual fee, you’ll improve your HVAC unit’s safety while also lowering your utility bills.

We provide two scheduled maintenance checks per year, priority scheduling and replacement of parts and units, as well as after-hours emergency service. These AC maintenance benefits will save you hundreds on preventable repairs and lower the risk of unit fires substantially. Members also receive half off diagnostic fees and 20% off unit repairs.

HVAC fires can be dangerous and result in costly damages, but with preventative maintenance, they can be avoided. Extend the life of your unit and keep your home and family safe by making bi-annual unit maintenance a priority. Schedule an inspection with AC Designs – an AC maintenance company in Jacksonville, Florida that you can trust.

Air Conditioning Mistakes That Raise Your Bills

Wednesday, July 13th, 2022

Air conditioning is a necessity during the Florida summer, but you’ll still be sweating it if you get expensive energy bills. Believe it or not, there are simple steps that can save you hundreds of extra dollars annually on your energy bills. Plus, they’ll help your AC unit run more efficiently and last longer, saving you even more in the long run.

You don’t have to suffer through heat and humidity. You can enjoy a comfortable home at an affordable cost—if you’re smart about your AC. Avoid these common air conditioning mistakes to lower the strain on both your AC unit and your wallet this year.

Forgetting to Clean Your AC Unit

A dirty air conditioning unit can cause your monthly bills to rise significantly. When your AC filters and coils aren’t clean, it can cause your unit to work harder or improperly. Make sure to check your air filters, coils, and outdoor unit regularly to avoid these unnecessary expenses.

When inspecting these components, be sure to temporarily turn your thermostat off. You should replace each disposable, dirty filter monthly to maintain your unit’s energy efficiency. Failure to clean or replace your air conditioning filters on a monthly basis can increase your energy consumption, resulting in higher energy bills.

Another important component to keep clean is your AC’s condenser. It is typically located within your outside unit and can become dirty as it is exposed to the elements. Take time to remove all dirt, leaves, and debris from the coils to keep your unit’s air flow clear. It is also important to clip shrubbery around the condenser to avoid airflow blockage.

If you don’t feel comfortable opening your AC unit, one of our experienced AC technicians can do this step for you.

Using the Wrong Thermostat Settings

Homeowners will see an increase in electricity bills if they do not optimize their thermostat settings. Setting your thermostat at too low a temperature can cause a spike in your bills. That’s why it is important to raise the temperature in your home during the day or when you’re away.

Using a programmable thermostat to lower the temperature when you’re at work or away from home can help save money and reduce your energy consumption. Today’s advanced technology allows you to raise or lower your thermostat settings on your phone, which can save hundreds of dollars each year.

On hot, summer days, consider using fans to help circulate the air within your home without turning down the thermostat. You can also cool your home by closing outside doors and windows to keep your cool air from escaping.

Neglecting Bi-Annual AC Maintenance

When your unit is not properly maintained, it is susceptible to more frequent repair costs and higher bills due to energy inefficiency. Routine maintenance is required twice a year to ensure that your unit is running properly.

Keep your AC unit in optimal shape with the help of an experienced HVAC technician. By identifying potential problems with your unit, they will help you avoid costly emergency repairs and extend its lifespan. Keep in mind that serious issues like refrigerant leaks can only be spotted by professionals.
