5 Common HVAC Myths

There are many tips and tricks to save money on your energy bill. However, there are also many common A/C tips that are not true. Don’t get fooled into believing the following myths could save you money.

  1. Closing vents will reduce your energy bill

Like many myths, this one at first appears true. Unfortunately, doing this can actually increase the air pressure inside the ducts. The result could be that the vent seams start leaking and spewing your cool or warm air in places where it shouldn’t, wasting money rather than helping you save it.

  1. It takes more energy to turn your unit on so you shouldn’t turn it off when you leave home

Many people think that setting your thermostat to a high temperature when you’re not at home saves more energy than simply turning the unit completely off. The reality is that you save more energy — and money — when your air conditioner is completely off. Programmable thermostats are inexpensive and allow you to set the times when your A/C cycles on and off — even when you’re not home.

  1. Routine maintenance isn’t important

The old saying, “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” does not apply to your A/C unit. Just like the other machines you rely on everyday, such as your car, your air conditioner is comprised of complex mechanical parts that need to be maintained on a regular basis. Even if it is running flawlessly, you should still schedule routine maintenance from a professional at least twice a year. Doing so can help you avoid issues in the future and save you money as well.

  1. Cranking the thermostat will heat or cool faster

Just because you push the thermostat way down, your air conditioning system won’t cool your home any quicker. It will simply cycle on and continue running until the temperature you set it at is reached.

  1. You only need to change your filter once a year

If your A/C has to work using a dirty filter, both airflow and air quality is reduced. Not only does this make the unit work harder, it can also shorten the lifespan. Ideally, you should replace or clean the filter every month or every other month.
